The megalith above Buzovgrad is one of the most mystical and highly energetic places in Bulgaria. Hidden in the Sarnen Sredna Forest, just a few kilometers from Kazanlak, this stone portal is also known as the Gate of the Mother Goddess. Carved into an opening between massive rocks, the last rays of sunlight of the day pass through, and the site is enveloped in legend, Thracian rituals and strong sacred symbolism. Without signs and without noise, the megalith stands on the edge of time – and invites you to something beyond the visible.

A megalith is a rock structure of two vertically and two horizontally arranged stone blocks forming a sort of trilithon – similar to Stonehenge. In the centre is a carved hole about 1.80 m high, through which the setting sun passes and illuminates the opposite rock during the summer solstice. According to archaeologists, the site dates from 1800-1600 BC and was used by prehistoric and Thracian cults. The megalith can be reached by an eco-trail, and there are other attractions in the area – the Father’s Stone, a Thracian tomb, the Devil’s Stone and the remains of a fortress.

The series begins with a climb on a dirt road above Buzovgrad, where an alternative route has been chosen, allowing you to reach almost the end by car. Several detours, important forks and the route to the megalith are explained. Signs to the Father’s Stone, which is located immediately before the portal itself, are also shown. After a short walk one reaches the megalith, a structure of massive stones with a shaped opening through which the sun passes at specific times of the year. We are told about its function – symbolism of birth and death among the Thracians, connection with astronomical observations, possible use in funerals. The archaeologist Alexander Fol, the scattering of his ashes on the site and the stone slab erected in his honour are mentioned. A map with the other sites in the area – Thracian Tomb, Buzovo Kale, Devil’s Stone – is also included. The finale is sunset and a quick descent along the now familiar trail.
