Episode BG2. Tsepina Fortress – The Last Rhodope Stronghold (no guide)

Hello, Bulgaria! 🇧🇬

Imagine a place where the mountain holds the secret of one of the last bastions of the Second Bulgarian State. High above today’s village of Dorkovo, amid pines and mists, rise the ruins of Tsepina – a fortress associated with Tsar Kaloyan and his brother Despot Alexius Slav.
Here you will find walls that have survived for centuries, the remains of a medieval church and views that span entire valleys. Cepina is not just a fortress – it is a stage of battles, faith and resilience. History, nature and legend all rolled into one place.

Note that this is one of the first episodes in the canal. It still lacks the guide elements, ratings, and additional guidance you’ll see in later episodes. Thanks for being with us from the beginning!

📝 Brief summary of the episode

In this episode we climb to one of the most impressive and little known fortresses in the Rhodope Mountains – Tsepina. High above the village of Dorkovo, amidst pine forests and steep slopes, are the remains of a former strategic centre from the time of the Second Bulgarian State. We explore the foundations of the citadel, the Christian temple and the reservoir, and trace the history of the place as the residence of despot Alexius Slav – brother of Tsar Kaloyan. The way to the top is short, but brings a feeling of travelling back in time. In the footage you will see a fortress, a legend and a view that linger in the mind.

🔥 What will you see in this episode?

You’ll retrace your steps along the path to the top, see the remains of the medieval citadel up close and feel the spirit of one of the last strong refuges of Bulgarian statehood in the region.

✅ Conclusion

A Tsepina is not just the remains of a stone on a hill – it is a story elevated above time. Amidst the silence of the Rhodope Mountains, this fortress holds the memory of power, struggle and intransigence. From the ancient Thracians to the despots of the Second Bulgarian Kingdom, Bulgaria’s past lingers here – the wind carries it and the view reinforces it.
