The Bulgarian oil-bearing Rosa damascena rose has been cultivated in the region for more than three centuries and is recognised as one of the finest cultivated plants for the perfume industry in the world. The rose oil, obtained by steam distillation, contains over 280 components and is among the most expensive essential oils on the planet. Kazanlak is not just a centre of production – it is the cultural capital of the rose, where rituals, knowledge and skills passed down for generations are preserved. The festival is also an occasion to meet artisans, producers and guests from all over the world, and the rose becomes a bridge between tradition and modernity.
Kazanlak celebrates with the crowning of the new Queen Rose, in front of an audience and official guests. A symbolic key to the town is given and the ceremony marks the culmination of one of the most important events in the town. Interwoven is the history of the celebration, which began in 1903 and still unites generations today. A large procession with schoolchildren, kindergarteners, amateur artists and folk groups from all over the country passes through the main street.
