Rozhen Pyramids – or Melnik Pyramids – are one of the most spectacular natural formations in Bulgaria. Located at the foot of the Pirin Mountain, these majestic rock formations are a reminder of the geological history of the region, which was once an ancient lake. The pyramids cover an area of about 50 square kilometres and are made of friable sandstones and conglomerates formed by erosion on clay-sand layers left from the bottom of an ancient lake. They are divided into three main groups: the Melnik, the Rozhen and the Karlanov, and their height reaches up to 100 metres. The landscape around them is dynamic and continues to change. The area was declared a natural landmark in 1960.

We present the Rozhen Pyramids – the most accessible and popular part of the rock phenomenon, with an eco-trail from Rozhen Monastery, panoramic views of Pirin and Slavyanka, and interesting sites such as the sand tunnel near the village of Lyubovishte. We also show important cultural and historical sites along the route – including the Church of St. St. Cyril and Methodius Monastery, associated with Yane Sandanski, and Rozhen Monastery itself, which dates back to the 13th century. In this episode, we head to the Rozhen Pyramids – part of the large-scale natural phenomenon in the Melnik region. We tell about their geological history, which has its origins in a shallow lake that existed 3-5 million years ago in today’s Sandansko-Petrička valley. We show how the pyramids were formed by loose sandstones and erosion processes. We cross the hiking trail that runs through the most popular area – from Rozhen Monastery to the panoramic point. We include the sand tunnel to the village of Lyubovishte, the church of St. Cyril and Methodius” with the grave of Yane Sandanski, and enter the Rozhen Monastery – a medieval monastery with a long and dramatic history. The episode ends with a sense of scale, antiquity and spiritual connection to the area.
