Episode BG12. Cherepish Monastery “Dormition of the Mother of God” (no guide)

Hello, Bulgaria! 🇧🇬

The Cherepik Monastery “Assumption of the Virgin Mary” is one of the most picturesque spiritual places in Bulgaria, nestled in the rocks of the Iskar Gorge. Located next to the river itself, it impresses with the harmony between nature and architecture. Founded in the Middle Ages, the monastery combines history, spirituality and legends that seem to float in the air between the centuries-old stones. Its orderly courtyard, white walls and cruciform temple create a sense of peace and meaning, away from the noise of the modern world.

Note that this is one of the first episodes in the canal. It still lacks the guide elements, ratings, and additional guidance you will see in later episodes. Thanks for being with us from the beginning!

📝 Brief summary of the episode

The monastery complex is located less than 100 km from Sofia and is associated with key moments in Bulgarian history – from the time of the Second Bulgarian Kingdom to the Chiprovtsi Uprising. In different periods Paisii Hilendarski, Sofroni Vrachanski and even Yavorov, who remained deeply impressed by the place, stayed here. In the centre of the monastery is the Church of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary, and above it, carved into the rocks, is a small chapel, accessible by a steep staircase.

🔥 What will you see in this episode?

In this episode we take a flight over the Cherepik Monastery, where we get a full view of the complex – the church, the monks’ cells, the museum and the white stone paths. We can see the river passing just metres from the courtyard, and majestic rock walls rising in the distance. We fly over the monastery to reveal the contrast between the silence inside and the wild nature around it. We also show the chapel in the rock, one of the most mystical parts of the place that often goes unnoticed by ordinary visitors.

✅ Conclusion

Cherepik Monastery is not just a religious centre – it is a spiritual haven where time stands still. It does not shine with tourist attractions or noisy trade. There is no restaurant, no souvenirs – there is only meaning, collected thoughts and space. If you like places that speak quietly but deeply, you’ll find more than a view here – you’ll find a state. The monastery is accessible and well-kept, but retains that modesty that makes holy places real.
