Hello, Bulgaria! 🇧🇬
Above the village of Gurgulyat, in Western Bulgaria, stands one of the most imposing monuments dedicated to freedom – the Mother Bulgaria Monument. Erected on a site of historical significance, it marks one of the decisive victories during the Serbo-Bulgarian War in 1885. The stone figure, surrounded by stelae and panoramic views, combines architecture and symbolism in one – a modern pantheon telling the story of the heroism of the regular soldiers and volunteers who defended the Unification of Bulgaria.

📝 Brief summary of the episode
The Mother Bulgaria Monument was built in 1985 on the occasion of the 100th anniversary of the Serbo-Bulgarian War. The central figure of light quartzite is about 16 meters high and depicts a woman with raised hands and a laurel wreath – the personification of victory and mother-land. Below her is a stylobate with the inscription “Glory to the Heroes” and around her are six concrete stelae facing the hills where the battle took place. The memorial is located on the very battlefield at the village of Gurgulyat – one of the most fierce places in the conflict, with over 200 Bulgarian soldiers killed.
🔥 What will you see in this episode?
The hill above Gurgulyat leads to a place where history is carved in stone. The Mother Bulgaria Memorial Complex stands out for its scale, situated amidst the silence of nature, without fences, signs or commercial environment. You’ll see the bronze sculpture facing the horizon, trace the inscriptions, and peer down on the battlefield itself from on high. Beyond the architecture, being here is a reminder that freedom is not always defended in the capital – sometimes it depends on a few dozen people in a small village, on a November day.
Above the village of Gurguljat, at the foot of the Viskyar Mountains, stands the Mother Bulgaria Monument, an imposing sculpture commemorating those who died in the Battle of Gurguljat on November 7, 1885. The monument was built in 1985 to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the Serbo-Bulgarian War and was erected on the site where one of the decisive battles took place. The central figure depicts a female figure with raised arms and a laurel wreath – an allegory of freedom and victory.
The monument is about 16 meters high and is surrounded by six steles with carved names of fallen fighters. On the stylobate at the base is inscribed the message “Glory to the Heroes”. The entire memorial is oriented towards the site of the battle, and the site offers views of the surrounding hills and valley where the clash between the Bulgarian volunteer units and the Serbian army took place. The area today is quiet and almost deserted, but the monument stands as a testament to the sacrifice and determination of the people who defended the Unification. Information on site is scarce, but the mere presence in front of the monument leaves a strong impression with its scale, silence and historical charge.

✅ Conclusion
The Pantheon above Gurgulyat is not just a monument, but a lasting memory, confronting oblivion. Located away from traffic and tourist routes, it keeps the memory of one of the bravest victories in the new Bulgarian history. The place does not rely on words – everything is told through the scale, the view, the silence. It’s worth it not for the easy access, but for the feeling of being on a land steeped in history. Freedom has been won, but let the memory be preserved too.
