The monastery of St. George the Victorious is among the most dramatically situated monasteries in Bulgaria. Erected on a lonely cliff at a height of over 800 meters, it literally hangs over the edge of the mountain and resembles an alpine castle. It was founded in the 13th century, according to legend, by the will of the Kiev prince George Glogh, who received lands from Tsar Ivan Asen II. The monastery hides mysterious passages, a rich history and an icon considered miraculous. The place is isolated, mystical and as if cut off from time – especially impressive in fog or winter snow.
