Episode BG24. Erma River Gorge (Tran)

Hello, Bulgaria! 🇧🇬

The gorge of the Erma River is a natural phenomenon, carved into the rocks near the town of Trun, where the river cuts a deep and narrow valley among the high massifs of the region. The cliffs rise sheer above the turbulent waters, forming a dramatic landscape of epic scale that is reminiscent of alpine gorges. Once considered impassable, the site is now accessible thanks to an eco-trail that offers breathtaking views, suspension bridges and the opportunity to literally walk over the river.

📝 Brief summary of the episode

The gorge of the Yerma River has been formed over millions of years as the river carved a narrow canyon into hard limestone rocks. Its depth in places reaches over 100 meters. The eco-trail, built in 2003, traverses part of the canyon with wooden bridges and metal railings. The starting point is on the outskirts of the town of Tran and the route is easy and suitable for families. Besides the picturesque rock formations, the area is rich in plant species and birds, some of which are protected. The gorge was declared a natural landmark in 1961.

🔥 What will you see in this episode?

We tell you about one of the most impressive gorges in Bulgaria – a combination of raw nature, geological layers and surprisingly easy access. The route passes along sheer cliffs and over the river on wooden bridges, and in the silence of the canyon each step reveals a new perspective on the grandeur of the Erma. Here the feeling is like being in a deep natural scene – saturated with sound, spaciousness and power.

In this episode, we head to the Gorge of the Erma River, a natural landmark nestled just 4 km from the town of Tran and about an hour and a half from Sofia. We tell the legend of the impossible love between a poor young man and a rich maiden, turned into eternal rocks on both sides of the river. We explain how to get to the place, what parking and food facilities there are, and about the existing market for local produce. We present the geological history of the gorge, shaped by the Erma River, which rises from Serbia and flows through a dramatic canyon with sheer cliffs called the Church and the Gill Stone. We mention technical details – 650 m altitude, depth over 120 m, karst forms, narrow passage with tunnel and bridge. We emphasize that the place was declared a natural landmark in 1961 and Aleko Konstantinov compared it to Switzerland. At the end we recommend another interesting location – the museum of yogurt in the village of. Studen Izvor.

✅ Conclusion

Erma Gorge is not just a natural landmark – it is a testament to the patience of water and the power of time. Narrow, high and sonorous, it leaves an imprint on the senses – from the first to the last bend. A well-maintained eco-trail makes the place accessible, but its spirit remains wild. If you’re looking for something authentic, with a slightly adventurous flavour and a powerful natural presence, Erma is the right choice.
