When and what is celebrated?
Valentine’s Day is celebrated on February 14th as the Day of Love. Although its origins are tied to the Christian saint Valentine, today the holiday is a global symbol of love, romance, and affection.
Origin of the holiday
According to legend, in the 3rd century, a priest named Valentine secretly married couples in love, despite the ban imposed by Roman Emperor Claudius II. For this, he was sentenced to death and executed on February 14th. Later, he was canonized as a saint, and his day began to be associated with love.
How is it celebrated around the world and in Bulgaria?
In many countries, couples exchange Valentine’s cards, flowers, chocolates, and gifts as a way to express their love. In Bulgaria, Valentine’s Day coincides with Trifon Zarezan – the holiday of winegrowers and wine, which gives people a choice whether to celebrate love, the Bulgarian wine tradition, or why not – both!
