Episode BG63. Tsarevets Fortress: APEX of the Second Bulgarian Empire! FULL GUIDE!

Hello, Bulgaria! 🇧🇬

Tsarevets is not just a fortress – it is the heart of an era in which Bulgaria reached its apogee. Over the hills of Veliko Tarnovo rises the symbol of the Second Bulgarian Kingdom – a place where kings ruled, clergymen wrote history and the bells of the Patriarchate echoed over the whole land. We go behind the walls of this legendary fortress to uncover layers of history, grandeur and secrets.

📝 Brief summary of the episode

We follow the entire route through the fortress – from the main entrance and the stone bridge, through Baldwin’s Tower and the royal palace, to the top of the hill with the restored Patriarchal Temple. We stop at the key places: the well, the dungeon, the throne room, the fireplaces. The movement follows the chronology of the management and architectural development of the complex. We uncover views, symbols and details that are often overlooked. The episode presents Tsarevets not just as a tourist attraction, but as a key to understanding our entire medieval identity.

🔥 What will you see in this episode?

Tsarevets Fortress was built over centuries, with its most significant development in the XII-XIV centuries, when Tarnovo became the capital. The total length of the fortress wall is about 1100 meters, with a thickness of up to 2.6 meters. Inside, the remains of over 400 residential and public buildings have been uncovered, including the royal palace and the patriarchal residence. Baldwin’s Tower commemorates the fall of the Latin emperor at the hands of Tsar Kaloyan, and the Patriarchal Temple on the summit was rebuilt in the late 20th century. Tsarevets is also the place where important events such as ascensions of kings, church councils and political executions were held.

We enter through the main entrance of Tsarevets, where we cross a stone bridge and the first checkpoint. A view of Baldwin’s Tower is shown and the path leads up to the main remains – including the royal palace, dungeon, well and execution scene. Lost features such as churches and dwellings are mentioned along the route. Reconstructions have been made on some of the ruins. Particular attention has been paid to the restored Patriarchal Temple with modern frescoes, which rises highest on the hill. From there you can see the view of Trapezitsa Hill, and the climb ends with a panorama and a final look at the historical grandeur of the place.

✅ Conclusion

Tsarevets is the stage on which Bulgaria has played its most sublime and most dramatic acts. Here the spirit of the Second Kingdom can still be felt in the stone, in the panorama, in the steps. Every gate, every ruin, every view tells of a time when our country was a power of world importance. And though centuries have passed, history still speaks openly here.
