Belogradchik Rocks are one of the most spectacular natural wonders in Bulgaria – rock formations that rise like sentinels around Belogradchik. Located at the foot of the Balkan Mountains, these reddish colossi reach heights of up to 200 metres and form bizarre shapes bearing names such as the Madonna, the Lion and the Horseman. Among them is the Belogradchik Fortress – a fortification with thousands of years of history, built on a natural rock terrace. Today the place attracts both nature lovers and history researchers, and is included in the hundred national tourist sites.

The Belogradchik rocks were formed over millions of years by wind, rain and erosion. They comprise several main groups – Falkovska, Centralska and Sbegovska, each with impressive shapes and names inspired by legend and imagination. Belogradchik Fortress originated in Roman times as a strategic post between the passes in the Western Pre-Balkan. Over the centuries it has been fortified by Bulgarians, Hungarians, Ottomans and even French engineers. The fortress consists of three inner courtyards with powerful walls, battlements, ambazura and dungeons, used until the end of the 19th century. Today it offers a unique combination of history and natural beauty.

The rock groups spread in several directions around Belogradchik, and the fortress occupies a central place – literally and metaphorically – in this rock kingdom. We will learn about their geological structure of sandstones, conglomerates and hematite, which gives the rocks their red hue. We will also look at how they have been used strategically in fortifications and observation posts. The fortress, with its three fortified courtyards, gates, battlements, towers and reservoirs, impresses not only with its scale but also with its long history – from the Romans and Sracimir to the Russo-Turkish and Serbo-Bulgarian wars. The place is part of the national memory and a symbol of sustainability.
The visit starts from the very centre of Belogradchik, where we head to the entrance of the fortress. We pass through the ticket area, where there is also a toilet, then climb a steep alley with cliffs on both sides. Inside we pass through several doors and patios, observing arches, battlements, tunnel passages and viewing platforms. We stop at various points, including signs with historical information, steps, a water catchment system and part of the fortification associated with Prince Sracimir. From the highest part you can see the whole town and the mountains. The fortress’s role in history is also mentioned, as is the final ascent via the same route.
