Episode BG22. Medieval Fortress Krakra in Pernik

Hello, Bulgaria! 🇧🇬

The medieval fortress of Krakra is located on a hill above the present-day town of Pernik and impresses with its scale and strategic position. It was built at the end of the 9th and the beginning of the 10th century and is named after the famous boyar Krakra of Pernik – one of the last defenders of the independence of the First Bulgarian Kingdom. The ruins of the fortress reveal parts of the defensive wall, citadel and buildings, and from the highest point there is a wide panorama of the surrounding area. Today the site combines history and nature, and has become a symbol of resistance and Bulgarian spirit.

📝 Brief summary of the episode

The fortress is located on a naturally fortified plateau with an area of about 4 hectares. Its defensive walls reach up to 2 metres wide and in places were over 6 metres high. Remains of over 40 buildings, including water reservoirs and churches, dating between the 9th and 14th centuries have been discovered. Archaeologists believe that the fortification was of important strategic importance in defending against Byzantine campaigns. Its name remains forever associated with Krakra, a leader who with a small army held off the onslaught of Emperor Basil II for 88 days.

🔥 What will you see in this episode?

In this episode we are transported to one of the places where legends come to life – above Pernik, among the ruins of a fortress that has withstood time and sieges. Its walls outline the former power and organisation of life inside, and the panoramic view awakens the imagination. Traces of churches, roads and water sources creep between the stone foundations, and every step here bears the imprint of one of the most glorious defences in Bulgarian history. The presence of Krakra is felt in the air – not as a legend, but as a spirit, a protector of the place.

In this episode, we take a look at Pernik’s Krakra Fortress – one of the most iconic medieval fortifications in Bulgaria. Upon arrival, one is already impressed by the good infrastructure and the availability of parking, as well as the fact that there is no entrance fee at the time of visit. The climb is easy and suitable for children. A beautiful panorama can be seen from the top and the foundations of dwellings and Christian temples can be distinguished among the ruins. We are told about the strategic importance of the place, about the two unsuccessful attempts of Basil II to capture the fortress and about the personality of Krakra – an honest and prepared leader. Archaeological finds such as a silver seal of King Peter and legends related to Ivan of Rila are mentioned. Also impressive are the modern reenactments – panoramic platforms, catapults and an observation tower. The place combines history, tranquillity and the opportunity for recreation, albeit in need of more serious maintenance.
