Episode BG11. Okolchitsa Peak – The Death Place of Hristo Botev (no guide)
Hello, Bulgaria! 🇧🇬
Mount Okolchitsa rises like a silent guardian above the Vrachan Balkan – at 1048 meters high, but also at an even higher place in our minds. It was here, on June 2, 1876, that Hristo Botev died – the man who did not just speak of freedom, but lived it. Climbing to the top, we do not just pass a route. We cross the border between history and memory. We see the 35-metre cross, hear the silence and feel something that cannot be conveyed with words – only with footage and heart.
Note that this is one of the first episodes on the channel. It still lacks the guided elements, assessments and additional guidance you will see in later episodes. Thanks for being with us from the beginning!
There are no separate timecodes – this is from the very first episodes in the channel, before the structure with guide elements was introduced.

📝 Brief summary of the episode
When we go up, there is no fanfare. There is air, the smell of pine and a feeling that we are walking towards something different. Every year, right on June 2, the sirens in Bulgaria stop time. But here, at the very top, the sound seems to dissolve into the rocks. It becomes not an echo, but a breath. A breath from the past that passes through us. Not much is said there. Even the children who are brought with their parents instinctively lower their voices. Somehow it is understood without words that this place is not to be looked at. It is respected.
🔥 What will you see in this episode?
The cross is seen from afar, but nothing prepares for what comes when we stand under it. From its base, an axis starts pointing in the direction from which Botev’s detachment came – a detail not everyone notices, but which changes everything. From there we walk down a path to the burial place – a simple stone cross in the middle of greenery. But when you stand there, the feeling is not ordinary. The wind always comes from the side. The peaks opposite are receding. It’s as if nature itself is making room for silence.
⭐ Location assessment
The assessment is entirely based on my personal impression and is made according to several main criteria considered separately. I use a 5-point scale where (1/5 – Very bad, 2/5 – Bad, 3/5 – Average, 4/5 – Good, 5/5 – Excellent)
| Criterion | Personal impression | Rating |
|---|---|---|
| Accessibility 🚗 |
You can reach the monument directly by car. There is an asphalt road, clear signage and a wide parking lot literally meters from the cross. It is suitable for all ages. | ★★★★★ |
| History 📜 |
Here is the burial place of Hristo Botev – one of the most sacred and symbolic places in Bulgaria. The Okolchitsa peak keeps the memory of the last day of the march of Botev’s detachment in 1876, and the monument itself was built with donations and the participation of local people. | ★★★★★ |
| Condition 🛠️ |
The place is well maintained. The monument, the surrounding area and the paths are in very good condition. It is clean, the grass is mowed, and the area gives a feeling of respect and care. | ★★★★★ |
| Conveniences 🚻 |
There are no toilets or restaurants at the very top. There are benches and shady places to relax, but basic facilities for a longer stay are absent. It is a good idea to be prepared in advance. | ★★★☆☆ |
| Price 💰 |
Access is completely free. There is no entrance fee and no paid parking. Anyone can visit the place freely, at any time. | ★★★★★ |
✅ Conclusion
Okolchitsa leaves in us not a pathetic, but a deep inner voice. One of the stone blocks next to the cross bears the words “My creed is freedom and humanity” – written by Botev himself, not for history, but in a letter to someone close to him. They don’t sound like a quote, but the essence of the place. Everything here is kept in moderation – neat and calm. It’s done in such a way as not to distract attention, but to direct it inward. We don’t just come here to do that, but to bow our heads, feel the silence and remember who we are.
