Episode BG36. The Legend of the Great and Small Veil near Nevsha
Hello, Bulgaria! 🇧🇬
The Big and the Small Veil are two impressive rock formations rising above the land of the village of Nevsha, near Provadia. Named so because of their specific shape, reminiscent of bridal veils, these rocks challenge the imagination at first sight. Legends about them have been passed down from generation to generation, intertwined with mystical elements, symbolism and deep human messages. The place is little known, but carries an unadulterated charm and a sense of touching something deeper than a mere natural sight.

📝 Brief summary of the episode
The two rocks are located in the area between the village of Nevsha and the rock formations known as the Pobite Kamani. They are natural, formed by erosion processes, but their appearance is extremely characteristic – like two towers wrapped in a delicate, fossilized veil. According to tradition, the Big Veil symbolizes a bride frozen in grief, and the Little Veil symbolizes a premature child. Their height reaches about 12-14 meters, and the terrain around them is partly rocky, partly grassy. The area does not fall within an official conservation area, but is valued for its landscape value and the tranquillity that surrounds it.
🔥 What will you see in this episode?
We plunge into the heart of the Dobrudja Plateaus, where we face the Big and the Little Veil – two rocks that seem to carry a message from another world. The stone layers tell silently of a time when people looked for symbols in nature. We will learn what legends lie behind these forms, trace their connection to local tradition and feel the spirit of the abandoned village paths that lead to them. The episode interweaves geology, mythology and personal experience without being detached from reality – everything happens on the border between the visible and the hidden.
Today’s series takes us near the village of Nevsha, in the canyon of the Provadia River, where we find the Big and the Little Veil – two rock formations shrouded in legend of a young bride who throws herself from on high to preserve her honor. The Big Veil is accessible on foot via an eco-trail that reaches the cliff’s edge and reveals an impressive panorama. The route starts from the village of Nevsha, with the option to drive to a certain point, after which the trek continues on foot. However, the small veil requires mountaineering equipment and is not recommended for tourist access. Both formations hide dozens of rock niches and cells, accessible only with specialized equipment. The area was declared a protected area back in 2006, and remains of a fortress with a wall, towers and medieval pottery have been found on the Big Veil. The approach requires care – the terrain is overgrown, there may be snakes, and the use of tick repellent is advisable. Although there is no time for the whole hike this time, the impression remains strong and a return visit is certainly in the offing.
⭐ Location assessment
The assessment is entirely based on my personal impression and is made according to several main criteria considered separately. I use a 5-point scale where (1/5 – Very bad, 2/5 – Bad, 3/5 – Average, 4/5 – Good, 5/5 – Excellent)
| Criterion | Personal impression | Rating |

| Accessibility 🚗 |
An eco-trail from the village of Nevsha leads to the Big Bull. There is another trail to the Small Veil, but it reaches the terrace above and is very dangerous. It is only possible to go up with alpine equipment. | ★★★☆☆ |
| History 📜 |
The legend of the bride being thrown off the cliff is intertwined with real archaeological finds of a fortress wall, pottery and remains of buildings on the Great Veil – dating from the 5th to the 14th century. | ★★★★☆ |
| Condition 🛠️ |
The route is partially passable, but lacks maintenance – the eco-trail is overgrown, there are no markings, and the rock niches are accessible only with specialized equipment. | ★★★☆☆ |
| Conveniences 🚻 |
There are no toilets, benches or information boards on site. There is no infrastructure, except for the trailhead itself. | ★☆☆☆☆ |
| Price 💰 |
The place is completely free access. No tickets, no fees, just a natural experience for anyone who wants to discover something different. | ★★★★★ |
★★★☆☆
✅ Conclusion
The Big and Little Veils aren’t marked on tourist maps and don’t welcome you with signs or amenities – but that’s part of their charm. The silence around them is almost therapeutic, and the legends that surround them invite you to stop and reflect. No people, no hustle and bustle, just rocks and stories reflected in the eyes of anyone looking for something different. If you love places that speak with silence and provoke the imagination, this destination will remain in your heart. Not with grandiosity, but with quiet power.
