Episode BG30. Rock Phenomenon “The Wonderful Rocks”
Hello, Bulgaria! 🇧🇬
The “Wonder Rocks” are one of the most fabulous natural formations on the Bulgarian Black Sea coast. Located on the shore of the Tsonevo Dam, these rock towers resemble an ancient castle built of limestone. Their shapes are so symmetrical and sharply cut that they have long inspired local legends and speculation as to whether they are man-made. The site is part of the nature reserve near the village of Asparuhovo, at the foot of the Balkan Mountains, and attracts visitors with its whimsical silhouette reflected in the calm water of the dam.

📝 Brief summary of the episode
The rocks reach heights of up to 40 metres and were formed by erosion in Jurassic limestone dating back some 150 million years. Despite their natural origin, during the construction of the road between Asparuhovo and Dalgopol in the 1950s, three tunnels were driven directly through the base of the formation, giving the site an even more photogenic appearance. The area is accessible by car and is part of the panoramic road around the dam. On one side are towers with sharp peaks and thin slits, and on the other is a sheer wall reflecting light in different shades during the day.
🔥 What will you see in this episode?
In this episode, the road passes right next to the cliffs, with the highway literally tunneling through them. The shapes of the limestone towers reveal themselves from both the ground and the air – perfectly aligned, as if sculpted by the hand of a sculptor. The waters of the reservoir complement the composition, and the rays of the sun create a spectacular play of shadows on the white walls. The site doesn’t offer a long itinerary but compensates with impact, accessibility and a strong visual footprint.
The path takes us straight through the heart of the cliffs – the turn-off is sharp, but after only a moment the limestone towers that locals call the Castle, the Knight and the Giants rise before us. We pass through tunnels dug into the very bedrock, and shadows and light alternate on their white walls like a scene from a movie. We stop on a small platform where we get the best view of the composition. We notice how the rocks separate into three distinct masses, each with its own character and appearance. At first glance the terrain looks accessible, but the structure is loose and not safe for climbing. We choose to stay in the picnic and photo area where we can safely enjoy the place without risk. It feels like a natural setting – no effects or additions needed. And finally, before we leave, we leave a trail to our next stop – a place that surpasses even this in scale and impact.
⭐ Location assessment
The assessment is entirely based on my personal impression and is made according to several main criteria considered separately. I use a 5-point scale where (1/5 – Very bad, 2/5 – Bad, 3/5 – Average, 4/5 – Good, 5/5 – Excellent)

| Accessibility 🚗 |
The site is directly accessible by car. There is a turn-off from the main road and a small parking lot off to the side, next to the tunnels and cliffs. | ★★★★★ |
| History 📜 |
The phenomenon was formed by erosion in Jurassic limestone, but also attracts human intervention – the tunnels were dug in the 1950s. The site is shrouded in local legend and is visually unique in Bulgaria. | ★★★★☆ |
| Condition 🛠️ |
The cliffs are a natural feature and are not actively maintained. There are collapses and loose areas, especially in the upper parts. The infrastructure is outdated but still passable. | ★★★★☆ |
| Conveniences 🚻 |
There are no toilets, directional signs or benches on site. The area offers no tourist infrastructure – it is perceived as a spontaneous stop along the route. | ★☆☆☆☆ |
| Price 💰 |
Посещението е напълно безплатно. Няма контролна зона, билет или входна такса. Обектът е достъпен целогодишно. | ★★★★★ |
✅ Conclusion
The Wonder Rocks are not a place for hiking or long climbs, but rather a short stop of great value. They not only impress with their shape, but also remind how strong the connection between water, wind and stone is. Even though the road passes directly next to them, the feeling is almost surreal – like a shot from a fantasy movie where nothing is left to chance. Here, nature has been both architect and set designer.
