Episode BG56. The Kaleto Tectonic Ridge – From the Age of the DINOSAURS

Hello, Bulgaria! 🇧🇬

The Kaleto Tectonic Ridge is a unique geological phenomenon located near the village of Reselets, municipality of Cherven Bryag. With its impressive karst structure, high cliff walls and rock masses, the place looks like a set from a prehistoric movie. Formed over 70 million years ago, this is one of the rare places in Bulgaria where you can literally walk among the layers of the dinosaur era. The area around the ridge is dotted with caves, rock formations and remains of fortress walls that reveal both the natural and human history of this magical place.

📝 Brief summary of the episode

The Tectonic Ridge is part of a three-stage eco-trail, with the first two connecting in a circular walk and the third leading to the Rock Dolls. The entire trail is about 4 hours long, with the main section passing through a scenic canyon also called “The Chasm” – a narrow passage with sheer limestone walls and giant collapsed cliffs. Caves such as the Dark Hole, stone portals, natural shapes with whimsical names and views of the Ruchene River alternate along the route. The climb up to Kaleto Fortress ascends 235 steps and leads to a panoramic meadow with the remains of a medieval fortification. The area is suitable for a gentle stroll, but also hides challenges that require attention and good mood.

🔥 What will you see in this episode?

The Caleto tectonic ridge was formed during the Maastrichtian stage of the Cretaceous period – between 68 and 72 million years ago, when the Earth was inhabited by dinosaurs. It was originally thought to be a classic graben created by tectonic faults. However, later studies show that the structure is the result of karst processes – vertical cracks in the limestone combined with erosional dissolution. The result was a gorge 600 metres long and up to 100 metres wide, full of massive limestone blocks. The site was declared a natural landmark in 1961 and is of interest to geologists and tourists alike. There are also traces of a late antique fortress wall along the route, and the remains of a medieval town, which was an important administrative centre of the Second Bulgarian Kingdom, have been preserved next to the Kale.

The episode starts with arrival at a parking lot at the beginning of the eco-trail near the village of Reselets. The starting point is marked with a fountain and a gazebo, and there is an information sign at the beginning of the route. Next, pass through the section known as “The Fallen”, formed by steep limestone cliffs and collapsed blocks. The natural formations and the trail between them are shown, with “Keep Clear” signs in several places. Part of the trail includes a spur to the Dark Hole, as well as the remains of the Maiden Tear Hut. This is followed by a climb up 235 steps to the remains of Kaleto Fortress, where panoramic views are available. An information sign about the medieval town of Reselets is also indicated. At the end of the episode, a short fragment of the Skoka waterfall near the village of Breste is included, which is not far away and is accessible almost without a hike. The end of the episode accentuates the feeling of a complete experience – a combination of rest, history and geological wonders.

Accessibility
🚗
The eco-trail can be reached by car and parked at the trailhead. The climb up to Kaleto involves 235 steps, which may be challenging for some visitors, but the route is clear. There is also a circular route passing all points. It takes about 2 hours. ★★★★
History
📜
A site of outstanding geological value from the Cretaceous, plus the ruins of a medieval fortification. One of those places that remind of lost worlds and ancient strata from the time of the dinosaurs. ★★★★★
Condition
🛠️
The trail is passable and marked, some signs are preserved, but the old hut “Maiden Tear” is completely abandoned and crumbling, which contrasts with the relatively maintained ecozone. ★★★★
Conveniences
🚻
There is a water fountain and at least one eco-toilet, but no restaurants or shops on site. The nearest amenities are in the village of Reselets or Cherven Bryag. ★★★☆☆
Price
💰
Completely free – no entrance fees for the eco-trail, the Kaleto or the adjacent sites. Suitable for families and day trips at no cost. ★★★★★

✅ Conclusion

The Calento Tectonic Ridge is not just a natural formation – it is a living book written in stone by millions of years of evolution. Walking through the limestone canyons and rock gates gives the feeling of stepping through time – from the Cretaceous to the Middle Ages. There is no signage, but there are signs with useful information, and in places gazebos and resting places. The path is accessible but requires care – especially around steep sections and hidden precipices. If you’re looking for something different – without the hustle and bustle of tourism, you’ll find silence, mystery and the unadulterated power of nature here.
