Episode BG54. The “Elenski But” Festival in Elena

Hello, Bulgaria! 🇧🇬

The town of Elena is a small Balkan jewel nestled at the foot of the Balkan Mountains. With its typical Renaissance architecture, stone streets and rich history, this place has an authentic spirit and genuine atmosphere. One of the most colourful occasions to visit is precisely the Feast of the Stag’s Butte, a traditional event that combines local cuisine, music and folk spirit. Every autumn, the streets are filled with the aroma of grilling, cheerful people and stalls with handicraft products.

📝 Brief summary of the episode

The event takes place in the central part of Elena, where there are numerous stands with meat delicacies, including the famous Elena ham – a mature pork leg, dried according to a special local recipe. Bagpipes and folk music can be heard in the streets and people crowd around grills and stalls selling sausages, souvenirs and wines from the region. The atmosphere is festive, relaxed and reminiscent of a real Bulgarian festival.

🔥 What will you see in this episode?

The Feast of the Reindeer Butte combines authenticity and folk merriment. We are present in the lively town square, where the aromas of grilled meat mix with the rhythm of folk people. The streets are lined with stalls selling handmade souvenirs, homemade jams, wines and, of course, sausages, hams and delicacies. Amidst the crowd, you can feel the spirit of community and the connection to tradition. Alongside the celebration, the town of Elena reveals its history – from Renaissance churches to the legend of the maiden Elena who gave her name to the town.

In the episode, we arrive in Elena after the previous visit to the Sunken Church. The day coincides with the Feast of the Stag Butte, which after a two-year hiatus is once again gathering crowds of people. We wander around town, passing stands of meats, sausages and souvenirs, and looking for the best place to eat. The camera also captures the authentic atmosphere along the main street, filled with music, grills and glitz. A brief legend of the town’s origins is included, as well as historical information about the three churches and the Russian battles of Helena. We end with the purchase of takeaway delicacies and an announcement for the next episode of Shipka.
