The Iskar Panega Geopark is one of the most picturesque and accessible places in Northern Bulgaria. Located in the Lukovit area, it offers an unusual landscape of karst rocks, emerald waters and winding eco-trails. The whole area follows the valley of the Zlatna Panega River and presents a combination of geological phenomena, biodiversity and attractive tourist infrastructure. The area has been designed to combine natural beauty with safe access – suitable for both a slow stroll and adventurous crossing on wooden bridges and stairs dug into the rocks.

The Geopark stretches between Lukovit and the village of Karlukovo and is officially designated as a protected area in order to promote the karst formations and the unique natural features. The main route follows an eco-trail about 12 km long, the most popular part being an easily accessible circular route of about 3 km. Wooden bridges built into the rock ravines themselves cross over springs, tunnels and narrow gorges. There are observation platforms and gazebos in places. The name ‘Iskar-Panega’ comes from the combination of the two karst rivers that occur in the area – the Iskar River and the Panega River. Iskar and r. Zlatna Panega.

In this episode, the focus is on the natural dynamics of the geopark – the curves of the river, the vertical cliffs and the green hues of the water that change with the season and the light. The trail leads past steep limestone walls, sometimes literally cut through to miss the wooden structures. There are sections with ladders, platforms over the water, and open rock windows through which the river peeks as if in a movie strip. The signage is clear, and the experience is suitable for families and travelers looking for accessible wildness. Off the main trail, less-traveled routes branch off to high points and cliff drop-offs.
The route starts near the town of Lukovit and follows an eco-trail built along the Zlatna Panega River – one of the largest karst springs in Bulgaria. It is stated that the trail has an exact length of about 2 km and is easy to pass, but in some places there are steep and slippery sections. The importance of comfortable shoes is stressed. There is a choice of two routes at the start, which converge at a gazebo in a clearing. Visitors can walk on wooden bridges built over the river itself and anchored into the rocks. Boating is recommended, where the captain can drop you off directly at the Dark Hole Cave to avoid repeating the route. You can enter the cave with flashlights, but there is a lack of lighting and safe infrastructure. At the end of the trail there is a spacious meadow with a rest area, making the experience complete – with the opportunity for activity, nature and rest all in one.

The Geopark “Iskar-Panega” is one of those places that combine convenience and aesthetics. It does not require alpine training, but provides a sense of depth and nature up close. There is no mystery here, but a clear beauty captured in green, limestone and flowing water. Suitable for a day trip, with no need for special equipment, but with a high visual and emotional return.
