Provertenika is a mysterious rock structure in the Eastern Rhodopes, near the village of Nochevo. The central element is a large, properly shaped circular hole in the rock through which sun rays pass in a specific way. Situated on a high plateau, among a group of megalithic forms, this formation resembles a primitive astronomical installation. From the first glance, it is obvious that the place is not just a whim of nature. It has been deliberately modelled and arranged – for a purpose that eludes us. The panorama from the height reveals the surroundings to the horizon, and the rock stands like a portal to another time.

It is believed that Provertenica was used as a solar observatory by the Thracians. On certain days of the year, the sun’s ray passes through the opening just at sunrise or sunset, marking important astronomical events. Other stone forms, including dolmens and rock thrones, are located around it, suggesting ritual significance. Archaeologists compare it to the “Bulgarian Stonehenge” because of its arrangement and symbolism. Although the site has not yet been officially excavated in full depth, legends and theories of a connection to cult practices give it special power. Time and erosion have left it virtually untouched, and the lack of mass tourism only reinforces the sense of authenticity.

In this series we share the route to Provartenik – one of the strangest and little known rock structures in the Karlukovo area. We tell how to reach it through several different roads, including past the Karlukovo railway station and the Karlukovo Madhouse, as well as through the area to the monastery “St. George the Wonderworker. The place is located near the Provartenika hut, and from there you can see the panorama of the characteristic rock with a large round opening.
We explain why some people call it an “ancient observatory” and what makes researchers compare it to megalithic monuments like Stonehenge. We tell how archaeoastronomers believe the vertical opening in the rock lets in light in a specific way at the solstice, but we also point out that it has no definitively proven function. We include personal impressions of the site, the reactions of local people and the feeling it creates – some find it energetic, others strange and unsettling.
We describe the area around the Prowertenik, where there are other rock formations, including so-called “stone houses”. The paths are littered with limestone blocks, and orientation is sometimes unclear. There are no signposts or explanatory panels, but this only adds to the mystique. Rather than seeking a definitive answer, we try to represent the site in its ambivalence – between archaeology, silence and personal interpretations.

The proverbial does not explain itself. There is no sign saying “sanctuary”, no directions on where to look. Just a rock with a circular gap, a few chiseled lines, and a sky running through them. Here the questions remain, and the answers come in silence. The place doesn’t need much interpretation. It just needs to be seen.
