Nestled in the Sredna Gora (Middle Forest) at an altitude of 1,000 metres, this Renaissance capital brings together architecture, rebellion and spirit. Houses with bay windows, colourful walls and a breath of history don’t just preserve memory – they tell it. It was here, on the morning of April 20, 1876, that the first rifle of the April Uprising cracked and gave birth to one of the most heroic episodes of Bulgarian history.

🚩 Timecode for quick access to video moments

You can navigate directly to a desired moment in the video by clicking on the timer👆
0:00 – Houses such as those of Benkovski, Kableshkov, Debelyanov and Karavelov have been turned into museums, each with its own character and atmosphere. The city unfolds like a living book, where each house is a chapter in the story of the Renaissance. The central street follows the curves of the Topolnitsa River and leads from the old stone bridges to the squares where bells ring and time seems to stand still.

Обратно към статията

🔥 What will you see in this episode?

Koprivshtitsa originated far in the past, but its heyday came in the 18th and 19th centuries, when the trade in cattle, furs and aba turned it into a rich craft centre. During the Renaissance, the town became famous not only for its economic boom, but also for its strong educational and revolutionary activity. Georgi Benkovski, Todor Kableshkov, Lyuben Karavelov, Dimcho Debelyanov were born here. On April 20, 1876, Kableshkov announced an uprising with the famous “Bloody Letter”. After the Liberation a process of preservation of the architecture began, and in the 20th century the houses were restored and turned into museums. Today Koprivshtitsa is the only completely preserved Bulgarian Renaissance town, part of the Hundred National Tourist Sites.

The episode begins with an arrival from Sofia along the mountain road, entering Koprivshtitsa from the southwest. The camera follows the first views of the Renaissance houses situated on the hillside, and opens a vantage point of the whole town nestled between the green ridges of the Sredna Gora. It is followed by shots of the stone bridge at the Topolnitsa River, the place where the first shot of the April Uprising was fired. The narrative focuses on the key role of Todor Kableshkov and the emotional value of this point. We walk inside along the cobbled street, where we can see many tourists, stalls lined up, flags hanging and the atmosphere of a lively city-reserve. Pictured outside is the house-museum of Georgi Benkovski, and the memorial plaque in front of it. At the end of the walk, the route climbs to the higher part of Koprivshtitsa, from where a panoramic view of the town and the surrounding area opens up. The final shots combine the natural landscape with the silence of the Renaissance courtyards and the sense of time that has stopped – but remains alive in the spirit of the people who fought for our freedom.

Обратно към статията

⭐ Location assessment

The assessment is entirely based on my personal impression and is made according to several main criteria considered separately.
