With a height of 1951 meters, it is part of the ridge that forms the natural furrow between Bulgaria and Greece. The climb to the summit reveals not only alpine landscapes, but also a sense of passage between two worlds – literally and figuratively. The area is part of the natural park “Belasitsa” and is distinguished by its biodiversity, which combines rare endemic species, centuries-old beech forests and panoramic views of Petrich, Sandanski and the Thessaloniki field.

🚩 Timecode for quick access to video moments

You can navigate directly to a desired moment in the video by clicking on the timer👆
0:00 – From the top, you can admire the view in all directions – towards Kutelo, the valley of the Strumeshnitsa River, as well as towards Greece. The peak carries strategic and historical significance related to border control in the past, and today it is a place of pilgrimage to nature, freedom and silence. Signs and markings make orientation easy, but the climb requires good physical preparation.

Обратно към статията

🔥 What will you see in this episode?

The ascent of Kongur begins at the foot of Belasitsa, as the route passes through shady forests, rocky slopes and mountain meadows. The peak is part of an international route that connects three countries – Bulgaria, Greece and North Macedonia – and it is along these trails that the pulse of the Balkans can be felt. Traces of the past can be seen along the way – border posts, old military trails and preserved artefacts testifying to decades of protection and surveillance. Above 1,900 metres above sea level, the landscape changes – trees give way to grassy peaks and the horizon unfolds beyond the borders. Kongur is not just a point on a map – it is a vantage point on the relationship between man, mountain and time.

In this episode we pass through several key areas of Belasica – the start of the trek begins on a tarmac road, then the route heads up a mountainside as the vegetation and gradient change. Emphasis is placed on the physical difficulty and effort of the climb, which is long and strenuous but accompanied by open panoramas and boundary pillars marking the very furrow between Bulgaria and Greece. The summit is reached in windy weather, and the finish is marked by a focus on the symbolism of the climb itself – not just a geographical peak, but a point of reflection and connection to freedom. There are no comforts, but there is a real sense of achievement.

Обратно към статията

⭐ Location assessment

The assessment is entirely based on my personal impression and is made according to several main criteria considered separately.
