Also known as the Ladder Cave, it towers above the Shumen Plateau and is accessible only by steps carved into the rock. The monastery bears the spirit of the medieval monastic tradition and is directly linked to one of the most profound Christian teachings – isychasm. Despite its seclusion, it leaves a strong impression with its architecture, symbolism and views of the valley.

🚩 Timecode for quick access to video moments

You can navigate directly to a desired moment in the video by clicking on the timer👆
0:00 – Trailer
0:36 – Beginning
2:38 – Shelter “The Comma”
4:55 – The Signs of the 5 Pieces
6:42 – Under the Rock Monastery
8:06 – Entering the Rock Monastery
11:18 – Final Thoughts

👉 Links and references to other videos:

💡 Other interesting places nearby:
BG31. The monastery dates from the 12th-14th centuries and is a cultural monument of local importance. Its historical significance is mainly due to its connection with isychasm, a mystical teaching advocating silent contemplation, which found favourable ground in Bulgarian lands.

Обратно към статията

🔥 What will you see in this episode?

In this episode, we approach the rock monastery on a route with variable pavement, pass through a shelter with recreational opportunities and climb the iconic rock steps to the monastery. Inside, we explore the three rooms, including the well-formed apse, niches for the iconostasis and window openings. The style of construction, the layout and the difficult access reveal the humble but firm philosophy of the ischism. From high above, the view of the valley and the route of the climb is clear, and the sense of detachment from the world is palpable.

In the episode we see the Khan-Krum rock monastery, located about 20 minutes drive from Shumen. There are two routes to reach the place – one through the village of Khan Krum and the other through the village of Troitsa, the latter is recommended because of the better passability of the dirt road. The starting point of the hike is the shelter “Zapetaykata”, suitable for a picnic, with a grill, benches and even running water. From there, a gentle but steep trail begins with no clearly marked signs, requiring caution. The climb ends at the rock monastery itself, carved out of limestone rock, composed of three main rooms – including an apse, a niche for an iconostasis and window openings. Mention is made of St. Gregory Sinaiticus and the Issychasm as the main spiritual link. Tips for safely traversing the steep sections are also included, as well as a sense of calm and rewarding views from on high.

Обратно към статията

⭐ Location assessment

The assessment is entirely based on my personal impression and is made according to several main criteria considered separately.
