Alpine Shelter “Eagle’s Nest” above Lakatnik

Hello, Bulgaria! 🇧🇬

Eagle’s Nest is a rocky alpine shelter perched on an almost vertical edge above the Iskar Gorge, not far from the village of Gara Lakatnik. Located at a height of about 120 meters above the river, this shelter literally hangs over the precipice, inscribed in the edge of the limestone cliffs. It was built in 1938 by hikers and mountaineers – with effort, courage and strong hands, without access to machinery or rope systems. The wood and metal structure is mounted on the edge of the gaping chasm, and the view from there encompasses the entire valley, the railway line and the village of Lakatnik in the distance. Because of this location, the site is often called “the most daring shelter in Bulgaria”.

🚩 Timecode for quick access to video moments

You can navigate directly to a desired moment in the video by clicking on the timer👆
0:00 – Intro Channel trailer
0:19 – Series Intro
2:27 – Where is it? It was used for shelter during hikes and training, but today serves a mostly symbolic and aesthetic function. Its height above the gorge is nearly 120 metres, and access to it is only possible by narrow paths through the “Drilled Stone” massif. The area is part of the natural phenomenon “Karst Rocks at Lakatnik” – an area known for unique formations, caves and deep cliffs that have attracted mountaineers for decades. The “nest” itself has become an emblem of alpine culture in Bulgaria.

Обратно към статията

🔥 What will you see in this episode?

In this series, we head to the heart of the Balkan Mountains – the overhanging rock range above Lakatnik, home to one of the most memorable alpine buildings in the country. We traverse the curves of the gorge and approach the very edge of the limestone massif to find the shelter hanging over the precipice. The view from its platform covers the whole hillside – with the railway line below, the Iskar River, and the whole symphony of light, rock and expanse. Its image has become an inspiration for hundreds of photographers, and its symbolism carries the spirit of independence, courage, and proximity to the sky.

The trail starts from the area of the restaurant “The Cave” in Lakatnik and passes through a panoramic eco-trail overlooking the gorge, the pierced stone and the rocky edges above the Iskar River. The Eagle’s Nest Alpine Shelter is 300 metres above the river, fixed with steel beams in the rock and painted red, making it visible from a distance. It was built in 1938 after a climb of Malyovitsa by Bulgarian mountaineers, and was rebuilt in 2000 by local rescuers and volunteers.

Access to the structure itself requires rope climbing skills. Inside there is space for two, hangers and an open view, but the door is narrow, the lighting is not working and the noise from the trains at night is constant. The route passes an old shelter with a stone building and a bench. A little further down is a memorial cross erected in honour of the fallen mountaineers, dismantled after 1944 and rebuilt in the early 21st century. Rare species of eagle, including the red-listed golden eagle, nest above the cliffs. The whole place exudes strength, risk and reverence for heights – without the need to cross the line of what is safe.

Обратно към статията

⭐ Location assessment

The assessment is entirely based on my personal impression and is made according to several main criteria considered separately. The shelter itself is not easy to reach – alpine experience and specialized equipment are needed, and access is only possible with a rope from the cliff edge. This does not make it inaccessible in the true sense, but rather puts it in another category – as a symbol, an inspiration, a landmark in space. Even just viewed from a distance or photographed by drone, the shelter leaves a sense of overcoming gravity – a piece of wood pinned between sky and abyss. Free, different, powerful – and memorable not for what it offers, but for what it evokes.

If you like the content we share, don’t forget to subscribe to the channel and support the project “Bulgaria one click away!”.
