Beyond the architecture, being here is a reminder that freedom is not always defended in the capital &#8211; sometimes it depends on a few dozen people in a small village, on a November day.<\/p>\n<p>Above the village of Gurguljat, at the foot of the Viskyar Mountains, stands the Mother Bulgaria Monument, an imposing sculpture commemorating those who died in the Battle of Gurguljat on November 7, 1885. The monument was built in 1985 to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the Serbo-Bulgarian War and was erected on the site where one of the decisive battles took place. The central figure depicts a female figure with raised arms and a laurel wreath &#8211; an allegory of freedom and victory.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"843\" data-end=\"1497\" data-is-last-node=\"\" data-is-only-node=\"\">The monument is about 16 meters high and is surrounded by six steles with carved names of fallen fighters. On the stylobate at the base is inscribed the message &#8220;Glory to the Heroes&#8221;. The entire memorial is oriented towards the site of the battle, and the site offers views of the surrounding hills and valley where the clash between the Bulgarian volunteer units and the Serbian army took place. The area today is quiet and almost deserted, but the monument stands as a testament to the sacrifice and determination of the people who defended the Unification.
