This is one of those places where from the first step on the bridge you feel the power of history. The fortress was used by the Thracians, Romans, Byzantines and Bulgarians, and its location on a naturally fortified plateau makes it a strategic centre that has existed intermittently for millennia. The site combines impressive ruins, rock galleries, tombs and spectacular views – all accessible and real to man.

🚩 Timecode for quick access to video moments

You can navigate directly to a desired moment in the video by clicking on the timer👆
0:00 – Intro Channel trailer
0:20 – Series intro
0:54 – Who am I and what is the idea of the project?
2:12 – Ascent to the fortress
4:35 – Ovech Fortress
4:57 – Location Information
7:38 – The three main periods of the fortress
9:44 – Final Thoughts

👉 Links and references to other videos:

💡 Other interesting places nearby:
BG36. Originally a Thracian sanctuary, later a Roman fortress and an important Byzantine military centre, it reached its heyday during the Second Bulgarian Kingdom. Built on a difficult to reach height, protected by cliffs, it includes the remains of a basilica, reservoirs, tanks and a 150-metre wooden bridge leading to its entrance. During the reign of Tsar Ivan Alexander a diocese was located here, and at the end of the 14th century the place was conquered by the Ottomans. Today, the fortress is open to visitors and impresses not only with its history, but also with the view of the Provadia plateau.

Обратно към статията

🔥 What will you see in this episode?

The ascent to Ovech Fortress reveals not only the architectural remains of one of the most significant fortifications in the Second Bulgarian Kingdom, but also the scale of the natural ridge on which it is built. As soon as you step on the wooden bridge, you can see a view of Provadia, and inside the plateau, water reservoirs carved into the rocks, stone foundations of towers and ruins of a basilica alternate. Particularly impressive is the cistern carved into the rock, over 70 metres deep, and the tombs, which bear the imprints of different historical eras. The site exudes strength and resilience – like a memory left in stone.

The climb up to Ovech Fortress starts with a slight uncertainty – the GPS doesn’t give accurate directions, but help from locals makes up for it all. The site is well maintained, there are benches at every stage for relaxation, and access to the fort itself requires a ticket, which is taken from a friendly attendant at the entrance. The weather is cool, suitable for walking. The fortress impresses with its view of Provadia, with a well-built bridge of 150 meters connecting the plateau with the fortress part. The main historical stages are indicated – from Thracian and Roman times to the Byzantium, the Second Bulgarian Kingdom and the Ottoman rule. Legends are also told about rock caves where food was stored during sieges. Personal impressions of the views, the condition of the site and useful tips for tourists are also included. The episode ends with a wish to share and participate in the project.

Обратно към статията

⭐ Location assessment

The assessment is entirely based on my personal impression and is made according to several main criteria considered separately.
