Okolchitsa Peak – The Death Place of Hristo Botev (no guide)

Hello, Bulgaria! 🇧🇬

Mount Okolchitsa rises like a silent guardian above the Vrachan Balkan – at 1048 meters high, but also at an even higher place in our minds. It was here, on June 2, 1876, that Hristo Botev died – the man who did not just speak of freedom, but lived it. Climbing to the top, we do not just pass a route. We cross the border between history and memory. We see the 35-metre cross, hear the silence and feel something that cannot be conveyed with words – only with footage and heart.

Note that this is one of the first episodes on the channel. There is air, the smell of pine and a feeling that we are walking towards something different. Every year, right on June 2, the sirens in Bulgaria stop time. But here, at the very top, the sound seems to dissolve into the rocks. It becomes not an echo, but a breath. A breath from the past that passes through us. Not much is said there. Even the children who are brought with their parents instinctively lower their voices. Somehow it is understood without words that this place is not to be looked at. It is respected.

Обратно към статията

🔥 What will you see in this episode?

The cross is seen from afar, but nothing prepares for what comes when we stand under it. From its base, an axis starts pointing in the direction from which Botev’s detachment came – a detail not everyone notices, but which changes everything. From there we walk down a path to the burial place – a simple stone cross in the middle of greenery. But when you stand there, the feeling is not ordinary. The wind always comes from the side.
